FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 23 Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team is set to face its newest Sunshine State Conference opponent, the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish, Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. in the NSU Arena.
The Sailfish come into the contest at 2-0 with victories over the University of Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras (91-47) and provisional Gulf South Conference and future South Regional member Auburn University-Montgomery (71-69).
In its annual NSU Tipoff Classic, the Sharks emerged 1-1. On Friday NSU earned a 64-44 over Delta State before falling to the No. 19 Bulldogs of Union University.
Christen Prasse led the scoring over the weekend, averaging 14.5 points and added 12 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals.
Samantha Logan averaged 11.5 points in the two games and pulled down a total of 17 boards. As a team, NSU shot 40 percent from the field and connected on 16-of-21 free throws.
On Saturday, the Sailfish edged past AUM, 71-69. Ayanna Holmes led PBA with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, playing just 25 minutes due to foul trouble. She pulled down three rebounds and handed out two assists while collecting four steals. Caroline Patrick added nine points on three triples as did Mina Salhia. Salhia added three assists but it was Jane Svilberg who led the way with four.
Last year, the two teams split the series, both teams winning on their home court. In the overall series, the Sharks hold an overwhelming 21-5 advantage over the Sailfish. In their most recent meeting in 2015, PBA grabbed an 88-73 victory over NSU.
Taylor Buie led all Sharks with 24 points, making eight three pointers overall (just one shy of the school single-game mark). For PBA, Hannah Grim scored 22 and Ayanna Holmes also had a double-double with 21 points and 10 boards. The last time the Sharks lost to the Sailfish at home was Feb. 2, 2002, when both teams were members of the Florida Sun Conference and competing in NAIA.
